چکیده

The rotational dynamics of 2-ethylnaphthalene have been studied using subpicosecond transient grating optical Kerr effect techniques. Both the neat liquid and a series of dilutions in carbon tetrachloride were examined, The neat liquid was studied over a temperature range of 2-100 OC, and the 1 M solution was studied from -30 to +25 OC. After ultrafast librational dynamics have decayed, there remains (>2 ps) in the neat liquid a triple-exponential decay of the orientational anisotropy. The slower two decays exhibit hydrodynamic temperature dependences, corresponding to rotational diffusion. The fastest decay is not hydrodynamic, being temperature independent from 2 to 40 OC. This decay is attributed to the relaxation dynamics of local structures in the liquid and is not present in all but the highest concentration ( 5 M) solution.

Structure and relaxation processes of an anisotropic molecular fluid confined into 1D nanochannels

Structural order parameters of a smectic liquid crystal confined into the columnar form of porous silicon are studied using neutron scattering and optical spectroscopic techniques. It is shown that both the translational and orientational anisotropic properties of the confined phase strongly couple to the one-dimensional character of the porous silicon matrix. The influence of this confinement ...

New divergent dynamics in the isotropic to nematic phase transition of liquid crystals measured with 2D IR vibrational echo spectroscopy.

The isotropic phase of nematogenic liquid crystals has nanometer length scale domains with pseudonematic ordering. As the isotropic to nematic phase transition temperature (TNI) is approached from above, the orientational correlation length, ξ, of the pseudonematic domains grows as (T - T(*))(-1/2), where T(*) is 0.5-1 K below TNI. The orientational relaxation, which is a collective property of...

Anisotropic local stress and particle hopping in a deeply supercooled liquid.

The origin of the microscopic motions that lead to stress relaxation in deeply supercooled liquid remains unclear. We show that in such a liquid the stress relaxation is locally anisotropic which can serve as the driving force for the hopping of the system on its free energy surface. However, not all hoppings are equally effective in relaxing the local stress, suggesting that diffusion can deco...

Structural Information from Anisotropic Orientational and Reorientational Averaging - Long Range Order in Solution State NMR

NMR spectroscopy is now established as the most effective method for the determination of three-dimensional structure of biomolecules in the solution state (Wüthrich 1986). The success of this technique relies primarily on the measurement of cross-relaxation effects (nOe) providing distance restraints between protons in close proximity in space (<6Å) supplemented by J scalar couplings which con...
